‘The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.’ 2 Chronicles 16:9
God made a promise, but He would have his hands full keeping it. Promised to establish David’s throne—that one of David’s own would sit on it. God was ultimately talking about Jesus. In the meantime, a lot of David’s children forgot who their father was.
Have you heard of the curse of the third generation?
The first generation starts with a blank slate and works hard to create something out of nothing.
The second-generation waits, watches, and helps.
The third generation—whether a family farm, business, or fortune— doesn’t know or appreciate the price that has been paid. They simply receive it, and squander it.
That’s the story in 2 Chronicles. Twenty kings, and 5 great revivals. Why? Because most of them turn away. It’s the same story all through history. When I have it good, I forget where it came from. I find myself at rock bottom, then remember the height from which I have fallen. In desperation, I cry out, and in mercy, God answers. Then begins the cycle all over again… Here’s the truth—God has no grandchildren. Every generation must choose again. I can’t rest on my ancestors’ accomplishments.
‘You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.’ Revelation 2:4-5
